Knackered

Am I allowed to have a title called ‘Knackered’ or am I coming over a bit Carry On? This afternoon I finished a fairly mundane web job which involved re-purposing printed content onto a website. Nothing mind stretching about it. But, I can tell you, having spent yesterday and today on it, I’m exhausted.

What’s strange is that I can happily spend hours on end working on software and I don’t find that tiring at all, even though it arguably requires more thought and concentration.

I concur with your experience. The issue is pace. Unless you go out of your way to create a change of pace when doing that kind of work, it is relentless even if it is not particularly taxing. It’s a bit like running or swimming.

On the other hand, genuinely creative work is more like cycling. There are slog-hard up-hills, but then there’s the joy of motoring along the palteau with the wind at your back, and the long free-wheel downhill at the end of the day.

I have a lot of respect for people who work at MacDonalds – and it’s not surprise that most of them work there as a means to a totally different (usually creative) end.

You need to plan some creative work for tomorrow, drink a couple of glasses of good red wine and get to bed at a reasonable hour. See ya tomorrow!
