Slam may be Glasgow’s (Scotland’s?) finest dance exhibits but they do deep house and proper songs much better than dancefloor rip-ups in my opinion.

This, features vocals, lyrics and I suspect a whole lot more, written by Billie Ray Martin and is on their 2004 album Year Zero.

Think Electro-beat Depeché Mode with better production skills and BRM’s typically sleazy torch song vocals (Gimme gimme gimme one more chance / I spent my royalties on call boys), but I prefer the refrains, for example So pick me up off the floor / and put me in your show tonight / I’m designed to blow your mind / if you just let me be myself.

According to Billie: “The song is about the movies “Women In Revolt” and “Trash’ – both movies feature Holly Woodlawn and she is the character that I wrote about in the song… It’s not autobiographical – I couldn’t care less about the ‘industry’ but have been quite happily been doing my little thing. If the industry wants to get involved, I’m here. If not – je regrette… [nothing]  There is only a tiny autobiographical part in as much as I enjoyed being part of [DJ] Hell’s shows and enjoyed not having to worry about the whole show but just playing a small part in it – so I felt the [part] ‘put me in your show’ reflected that. Other than that I assure that, sadly, no money was spent on callboys… ”
