The World in the Mix 3

Georgio Ponticelli has published the playlist to yesterday’s The World in the Mix 3 heard from 5pm to 12am UK time on di.fm.

Georgio wrote this on his website about how it works:

“Have you been wondering how we organize and produce the show?

“First of all I send out invitations to “old” DJs (for the third 3 editions most DJs have been re-selected from the previous edition) and the “new entries”. As soon as everybody has replied, I proceed to deciding the line-up which is then resent to all the DJs. Information and biographies are requested and the info page is created.

“Since it takes about one month to organize the show, I start with a long time advance and I contact the DJs singularly, one by one asking for their playlist. The first DJ on the list has to reply, sending his 3-track playlist so I can pass it on to the next DJ (this way, we avoid tracks being repeated and at the same time, having the previous DJ tracklist helps in keeping the flow in the next minimix).

“As soon as a DJ sends his tracklist he starts mixing his set and then sends it to me, who collect all the sessions and finally mix them together to make the show. Add some comments and jingles and voilà the show is ready :)

Sonos and Tiger

I’ve been writing about Sonos over the past months and my ramblings about whether to get one. I decided not to, and judging from recent correspondence my decision was correct.

Firstly, they’ve announced a partnership with Real’s Rhapsody programme. Which pretty much means they’ll never support iTunes Music Store format. Hey, if you’re gonna partner with a company, best make it the one most likely to fail huh?

Now they’ve ‘found that one key area of MacOSX 10.4’ breaks Sonos’ compatibility and that a new version will be available mid-late May 2005. ‘Please do not upgrade to 10.4 if you wish your existing OS X 10.2 or 10.3 Mac to continue to work with Sonos’.

That’s really funny. How much does it cost to subscribe to the Apple Developer Network? The GM version of Tiger was out weeks ago. Moreover, how come lots of small third party software developers have already managed to get their products ready for Tiger, and Sonos haven’t. Lots.

Sorry no Fish

I was e-mailed a couple of days ago by Barclays Bank. Yes it was another phishing attempt. But this time it was rather amateur. According to the e-mail headers, sent from nikeairmaxonline.com.

Sure, the displayed link to the phishing site was a valid Barclays Bank address, but the actual destination was to a domain named www.barclays-online-system.co.uk

Nominet showed that this domain was registered to someone in Cheltenham on 24 April, registered through Claranet. I wondered how long it would be before the site was pulled.

It’s now been pulled, but today I get another e-mail. This time however the link is to a page given by IP address belonging to a site for toosexyjeans.com. The page itself doesn’t even exist.

Update 29 April Here we go again. Now using www.lloydstsb-system-online.com as a domain, which doesn’t exist.

Backpack

37signals has posted a new teaser on their upcoming Backpack application. It appears that it’s going to make great use of e-mails as an interface to posting things on websites.

Which is great! E-mail has always been under-utilised and 37signals have grasped the concept of it being ‘the command line’.

I’m also thinking of new Dashboard Widgets for Tiger. One of the widgets I want to develop is a suitable interface to Cricinfo’s website for updated cricket scores. But this Backpack post has got me considering a nice simple interface into Backpack. When you can’t be bothered composing an e-mail, or you just need to tick something off quickly, or I need to do a quick post to Ninth space.

The organiser interfaces in the Apple Newton were fantastic at being able to quickly construct items using frequently used (or past used) components. My Backpack Dashboard would do similar.

Now all we need is Backpack functionality in Basecamp.

Emm Gryner: Wisdom Bus

Audioscrobbler is indeed a rather cool thing indeed. Wandering around member profiles early last week I was looking for other people into Nerina Pallot. I stumbled across one person who had her in their top-something list of played tracks. At number one was Emm Gryner.

Then I had a look at Emm’s entry on All Music Guide, which is usually the first place I visit when I find a new artist. Four stars all round.

So I then visited the iTunes Music Store and they have some of her albums. What’s missing is her major label debut Public – the rest are all released on her own label, including her debut The Original Leap Year from which Wisdom Bus comes.

The Original Leap Year ranges from piano / vocal tracks, to those with electric guitars, including the shoegazing electric, acoustic and pad drones of Headline Girl (my personal favourite), and the nod-to-Madonna of Wisdom Bus which includes a note sequence nabbed from Dear Jessie and some similarly homaged strings.

Now, the thing is she’s released loads of albums on her own label. Problem is how to get them. Ah, but I’m going to Canada shortly, aren’t I?

Electrelane

Instrumental bands don’t make the best support acts in the world, unless they’re supporting an instrumental band. In which case you’re at a very strange gig indeed.

Electrelane used to be predominantly instrumental. Certainly around the time that I saw them supporting Throwing Muses (early 2003), they were a band that were just beginning to find their way in attaching lyrics to music – only one of their songs really struck me as being ‘very good indeed’.

Their second album The Power Out, released last year, is now on the iTunes Music Store. As is their brand new single. It’s very Stereolab, but with more guitars and is rather nice.

Parcelforce Collections

Obviously Parcelforce don’t expect people who use Macintosh equipment to want to send parcels. Their on-line booking system that allows you to arrange for the pickup of a parcel only works with “all functionality” on Internet Explorer version 6.0 or better. Which will never come to the Mac.

Last time I tried to book on-line, they didn’t have this warning, which meant I never got my address labels. I rang their customer service department only to discover that they didn’t have access to the internet booking system – they could only cancel a pickup. This cancellation didn’t actually refund me though. To do that I had to e-mail Parcelforce.

Which meant to get a pickup with labels provided by Parcelforce I had to book over the phone (i.e. pay a second time and wait for my refund for the first booking).

The World in the Mix 3

In my addled stupor on Sunday I couldn’t remember when Giorgio Ponticelli’s 7 hour trance set was going to play on Digitally Imported. I’ve now found this, which indicates it’s on 29 April from 5pm BST and will have 25 DJs each playing 3 track minimixes and all mixed together by Giorgio. That’s 75 tracks.

The ‘Behind the scenes’ section on the above link is quite interesting. Looking forward to it.
