Do it now

The Getting Things Done philosophy includes an In Box which is where you put all the things that need your assessment. Whilst assessing the In Box, if you can do it within 2 minutes then you might as well do it straight away.

I’ve noticed over the past few years I’ve procrastinated on things that might take me as little as 10 seconds to get done. I’d often walk by something and be reminded that I need to do something with it, only to leave it for another time. I’m now trying to change my ways. If something grabs my attention anywhere in my house or office and it takes less than 2 minutes to deal with, I now try to deal with it immediately. This is a simple, minor, change in behaviour but it has had a remarkable affect on my well being.

Ayria: Infiltrating My Way Through The System

There’s a photo of Rachel Stevens on the cover of the Herald Magazine today. It’s another promotional piece where Rachel explains how tough her life was and the comfort she found in S Club 7. Bull. That’ll be the new album talking dear.

Fortunately there is an alternative. Ayria’s back with her new 10 track EP, featuring My Revenge On The World from the forthcoming album Flicker.

These tracks are the first written solely by Jennifer Parkin. Gone are the nods towards club-dance and trance, instead, everything bangs hard, particularly the remixes. There’s less emphasis on melody, more on rhythms, and the leads and loops which embed themselves in amongst the rhythms. Similar to the differences between club-trance and psy-trance. Giving more space for the vocals. Consider also, for example, the Cycletribe and PTIncision remixes of Cutting, the former emphasises the lyrics, the latter moves things around a bit, hiding the lyrics behind driving synth leads.

The original version of Infiltrating My Way Through The System is however more traditional, with its pads and DM synths, harking back to Debris. Either way, it’s nice to hear audiogenic material that breaks away from the bland niceness of mainstream rip-offs of electro. Rachel, please take note.

Ellen Allien: Sehnsucht

What’s the first thing you do when you get a sampler? Start sampling vocals. Sehnsucht is a great example of how to incorporate tiny snatches of vocals as a lead melody and percussion; backed up by some crunchy industrial housey electronica and some gated pads. Altogether musically wonderful.

Panic

Searching for all file names with ‘jml’ in them yesterday evening. Finder starts running very slowly. Plenty of beachball action. Manage to persuade the Spotlight search to stop. Then sleep my Mac.

Wake it up this morning. Blue screen. Nothing else. Go and reboot.

Plenty of whirring later, Mac boots up. Try to login. Sorry ‘you cannot login at this time’. Wait. Wait some more. Try again. This time I get in.

Start up JEdit. No content in any of the files I’d opened! Close JEdit.

Try starting Apache2. Apache2 fails. Cannot find any of my DocumentRoot’s.

Panic. Big time.

Wait a bit.

Start JEdit again. Can it find my files now? Yes. Phew.

Start Apache2 again. Okay this time.

Spooky.

Non sense-o

You can buy official Douwe Egberts coffee pods for the wonderful Phillips Senseo coffee machine. When they were originally launched each pack of 18 pods came in a bag which you could seal with a little sticky strip to keep them fresh.

Today I discovered that whilst the bags have remained identical, there is no longer a little sticky strip. Which is just plain crap.

You can buy the official pods in a much larger range from Senseo Direct.

Ellen Allien: Washing Machine is Speaking

Is it minimal techno, microhouse or just plain techno? I dunno. It’s mighty groovy. I wish I’d written this track. This is taken from Ellen Allien’s new album Thrills which is more traditional than her first two full length outings.

Ellen Allien used to be head of German techno label bPitch Control. Now she’s quit that job to spend more time with her music. Quite right too.

Without Envy

I used to be a bit envious of the work environment that people at Fog Creek have, judging by the writings of Joel Spolsky. But I’m not now, although there is some weird DJ mixer thing in the background. And they have Functional Specifications which we know is not the way to go any more.

Actions, Mail and iCal

I’ve just started ‘Getting Things Done’. This post is a little ahead of some others I’ll be working on, so they’ll be a lot of ‘how did he get here?’ wandering around your brain whilst you read it. More posts will fill in the blanks.

I have a number of Smart Mailboxes setup in Apple Mail. Some are for clients, others for specific people. I also have two for actions. These are things I have to do.

The first is a smart folder that basically congregates all content in other folders. This is so I can see all the actions I have to do, regardless of its context.

The second is a smart folder showing all actions I’ve decided to do today. When I flag a e-mail message it turns up in that folder. This means that at the start of each day, or whenever I feel like it, I can flag a couple of actions and get a list of what I need to do. I don’t use To Dos in iCal or anywhere else, because all of them just keep shouting at you. I need to quieten things down a bit.

These of course are not all my actions. I have a A5 based organiser which has projects and loads of associated Next Actions. I therefore need to keep looking there to make sure I’ve not missed something. But I like the idea of working at my computer and not having to look in two places.

So, I’ve come up with some fake e-mail addresses. When I need to send myself an action, I e-mail chris.action@mydomain.com. A rule in Apple Mail then files it accordingly when received.

Likewise, chris.today@mydomain.com for actions I must do today.

I have recurring events in iCal. Normally these go ‘bong’ at appropriate times and flash a message at me. I’ve changed these so they use one of the two addresses above to make sure I don’t forget I’ve been reminded. If you want to do this on iCal, you need to add extra e-mail addresses into your record in Address Book, then restart iCal so it picks up the new addresses.

Next steps will be to see if Automator can make the process of ad-hoc actions more seamless and/or see if a widget can be developed for quick creation of actions without going through the mail creation process.
