Goldfrapp: Slide In (DFA Mix)
I bought Goldfrapp’s downtempo debut Felt Mountain in 2000 on the back of some positive critical reviews. Unfortunately it never really made it through to me – it sits on my Mac mini as an unwanted collection of MP3s.
Three years later, Goldfrapp re-emerged on Black Cherry as a diva-touting electro band. Still nothing.
Then last year, we had Supernature. This time around there seemed to be no choruses, merely hints at what could become of each song. Consequently this blog documented my true feelings about that album. How could I possibly feel that way based on mere previews? Because I can.
So, it’s a bit of surprise that this track is welcomed into my arms. Reviewing the original still makes me screw my eyes up and go scurrying for a sick bag. But this remix is excellent primarily because it virtually reinvents the song as as a disco track. It retains Alison’s seagull-siren coos and drops a massive tribal instrumental break that lasts, gosh, forever, using this year’s entire supply of cowbells.
The remix is on CD1 of the forthcoming release of Ride A White Horse, due 13 February. But, you can get hold of all 771 seconds of it now, if you know where to look
