Ellen Allien and Apparat: Under
There are two ways to listen to Orchestra of Bubbles and you can pick and choose which you use anytime. Sometimes you can do both simultaneously:
- You can snorgle around, hunting in the sonic undergrowth for choice musical truffles. There’s plenty to find.
- Or, you can lie naked in a grassy meadow and let the music rain down on you. Metaphorically, if you please.
I’ve only listened to the album twice, but its blooming marvellous. Blooming is the right word, because every time you listen it seems to have evolved into something richer and more expansive. It’s no longer a techno album, there’s facets, hints and influences from other artists, other genre. It’s an incredible piece of work.
Under is as much about sounds as it is melody, although the melody is barely there. There are additional melodies, but they’re ones that you make up yourself whilst listening to it. Filling in the blanks.
Similarly, Edison has this massive invisible breakbeat, but that’s another story altogether.
