KDD: Lonesome

An impromptu cover of Hank WilliamsI’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, recorded earlier this month by Kristin Hersh and husband Billy. Had it been recorded about two decades ago I’m sure it would have made it onto This Mortal Coil’s first album.

It’s both a song and an incidental.

Download it here.

Client: Monkey on My Back

Coming from The Rotherham Sessions, it reminds me of mid-80s New Order, despite the manky piano loop. The loop feels completely out of place with the rest of the song, but also suits it perfectly. I’m confused.

Global Warnings

Here are some things I found out last night, watching the BBC News and Newsnight. First the “that’s interesting” knowledge-bite: Modern dishwashers use less water than washing by hand.

Now, the “I thought we had a chance, but now I’m convinced we’re screwed” information:

  • If the UK stopped using cars entirely, we’d cut our carbon emissions by 2.5%.
  • That 2.5% would be entirely offset by the increasing emissions coming from China in just 51 days.

Creepy Accounts

There’s something unnerving about entering a transaction into an accounting package when that transaction relates to the purchase of the accounting package which you’re using to record the transaction, etc..

Customer Unsupported

Last week I had reason to contact Scottish (British) Gas by e-mail due to an issue with account information on their house.co.uk website. One page told me I had to pay money, another told me I didn’t.

You can contact them by e-mail, which together with their phone support is part of their ‘award winning customer services team’. I sent them an e-mail, but as they appeared unable to respond to my e-mail in 4 days, I rang them today.

The guy that answered claimed to know nothing about house.co.uk ‘never seen it,’ he announced, and according to my records my e-mail hadn’t been received either. I’ve concluded that they have a website that appears to be flaky and a customer service division that doesn’t know what they should be supporting. Fantastic.

Ellen Allien and Apparat: Under

There are two ways to listen to Orchestra of Bubbles and you can pick and choose which you use anytime. Sometimes you can do both simultaneously:

  • You can snorgle around, hunting in the sonic undergrowth for choice musical truffles. There’s plenty to find.
  • Or, you can lie naked in a grassy meadow and let the music rain down on you. Metaphorically, if you please.

I’ve only listened to the album twice, but its blooming marvellous. Blooming is the right word, because every time you listen it seems to have evolved into something richer and more expansive. It’s no longer a techno album, there’s facets, hints and influences from other artists, other genre. It’s an incredible piece of work.

Under is as much about sounds as it is melody, although the melody is barely there. There are additional melodies, but they’re ones that you make up yourself whilst listening to it. Filling in the blanks.

Similarly, Edison has this massive invisible breakbeat, but that’s another story altogether.

More CV Hints

  • List your achievements and responsibilities in reverse chronological order, i.e. most current appears first. This is especially important when you’ve had a long career.
  • Don’t include your entire career history, when you’ve been in work for a long time. Who’s interested in what you did 25 years ago?
  • Don’t list everything you’ve ever done.
  • Achievements and failures are really important to document. Just listing what your responsibilities and roles were doesn’t mean anything.
  • Don’t submit a 14 page CV, because it won’t get read.

Quote:

Personally, I find myself less and less tolerant of religion, of people wanting to share their beliefs with me

Some people are getting irritated by the occasional religious postings on Hugh MacLeod’s gapingvoid blog. Others feel the exact opposite. I don’t care either way, it’s Hugh’s blog, so he can do what he wants.

Besides, why would we only want to read blogs that reflect exactly our own beliefs and views. How boring. Chill out. Enjoy other people’s opinion. Heck, it may even change you for the better.
