I’ve not had to fight-off Google Toolbar on ANY of my Macs, though I could install the Firefox one if I wished (which I don’t). Note that this is NOT the same as the integrated search in the toolbar of many browsers (though that is undoubtedly beneficial to Google aswell).

Some Windows PCs come with Google Toolbar installed, noteably Dell. Some ISPs install Google toolbar on Windows PCs. Even Adobe will install Google toolbar in IE when you install Shockwave for Windows! It’s not obvious to novice users that it’s optional, or how to remove it if you wished.

I’m not sure what the revenue model is, as I’ve never taken any interest in it, but I think one feature is that it profiles your browsing to offer similar sites and so may generate revenue through AdSense et al – effectively the toolbar may have advertising in it, even though one of it’s features is to block pop-ups!

But I think their main concern is that Vista’s IE will have Microsoft’s own Internet Search integrated within it which may eventualy topple Google as the number #1 search engine.
