Piano, Voix

It’s all you need. Three songs from a live set that Emily Haines performed for Belgium’s Radio Libre:

The first song is Doctor Blind. You may need to click the little >| next track icon to get to the other two tracks, or they may load up on their own: The Lottery and Crowd Surf Off A Cliff.

Emily Haines’ new EP What Is Free to a Good Home? featuring five new songs from the Knives Don’t Have Your Back sessions, plus a remix of Mostly Waving is out on iTunes Canada now and released in Canada in real life on 22 July.

iPhone Activation

Apple has posted a new video detailing how to use iTunes to activate your iPhone and the various ways of synchronising information (e-mail accounts, calendar, contacts, music etc.) to the iPhone.

It was pointed out some weeks ago that the iPhone doesn’t appear as a removable drive on your desktop. You’ll note from this video that you cannot manually move music and video to the iPhone – you have to pick one or more playlists.

Two more things:

  • Your iPhone tells you when it has been activated;
  • Syncing is stopped if your iPhone receives a call whilst syncing.

Simple, Affordable

In my recent trawls around US mobile networks’ websites I was puzzled how some of them insist on customers building their own plans, based on voice and data components. Whilst this might seem a good idea, it distorts the amount one ends up paying per month because the price you see on the websites isn’t the price for everything you might need.

Apple and AT&T have today finally announced the pricing plans for the iPhone, and to quote verbatim from the press release, they are “simple, affordable”:

All iPhone monthly service plans are available for individuals and families and are based on a new two-year service agreement with AT&T. Individual plans are priced at:

  • $59.99 for 450 minutes,
  • $79.99 for 900 minutes and
  • $99.99 for 1,350 minutes

All plans include unlimited data (email and web), Visual Voicemail, 200 SMS text messages, roll over minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile.

There’s a one-time activation fee of $36. Family packs are also available, which is probably similar to Apple’s Mac OS X Family Packs.

Activation is via iTunes and Mac users need to be on Mac OS X 10.4.10. (This specific requirement is going to annoy some people!)

MiNa: Praying Mantis (Demo)

MiNa is a new semi-acoustic semi-folk project from Lunik’s JaĆ«l Krebs and Luk Zimmerman. Their debut album, Playground Princess is out on 28 September. There are four lovely demo tracks on MiNa’s MySpace page, including Praying Mantis, which is breathtakingly restrained in its delivery.

Last.fm and the National Day of Silence

Last.fm responds to the National Day of Silence:

So why do we think the “day of silence” is not a good idea?

We do not want to punish our listeners for our problems, period.

Obvious, really. More here. Bravo!

Auf der Maur: Lightning Is My Girl

Yeah, we all know that Charlotte Hatherley scrunches her musical influences into every song she writes. Well, here’s some news: so does Melissa Auf der Maur. Her debut album, Auf der Maur is a exhilarating scurrying rock album birthed from the experience gained in Hole and Smashing Pumpkins. Although Melissa’s voice is pretty, in all its forms, I just wish it was Courtney singing.

Objectives and Changes

  • Does Apple care about enterprise customers with the launch of the iPhone? Some analysts think not, but maybe Apple doesn’t need to consider the enterprise. After all, if enough people use the iPhone, “the enterprise” will follow. Either that, or disappear altogether.
  • There’s a lot of discussion about whether Last.fm is (or should) take part in the National Day of Silence. This event is to protest against the proposed price increases royalties payable by US internet radio stations. Most opinions revolve around a) Last.fm don’t care, and, b) they want to kill off the competition. It could just be this: juvenile piffle and not worth considering. Besides, what about Last.fm’s subscribers – would they get a day’s subscription refunded?
  • Liquibase is an open source, DBMS-independent library for tracking, managing and applying database changes.
  • I’m still at a loss as to why many people cannot multitask. It’s something that becomes very important in small businesses and is a trait that’s vital as businesses try to get more productive to remain competitive. Multitasking is not bad. It’s amazing.
