Tokens

I’ve just received notice from our business bankers that we’re going to get a Token soon. A Token is a small device that displays additional ephemeral security information when you log in to their website. I’ll need to provide that information every time I log in, and when I ring them.

I expect that these Tokens will appear everywhere: one for each personal bank account, each on-line credit card account, PayPal, Google Checkout etc.

Then, when I’m out and about, I’ll need to carry a bunch of Tokens with me. Just in case. Fabulous.

I got one from NatWest last week for my personal account. It’s about the size and weight of an old-fashioned calculator. You bung your card into it, tap in the challenge from the website, and it issues a response for the website. Nice and secure. BUT it means I have to carry the darn thing round with me if I want to do online banking away from my desk.

That sounds bizarre – I was only complaining about little gadgets that you can fit on keychains.

If you had an iPhone, would you carry around your NatWest device, just in case? It might be bigger than your iPhone! I hope that biometrics comes to rescue us from an overload of Tokens.
